Nought vs Google Sheets

These two barely compete, because they are built for different jobs. I build Nought, so take the framing with that in mind, but the honest answer to “which is better” is: it depends entirely on whether your spreadsheet is shared or private.

What Google Sheets is unbeatable at

Live collaboration. Several people editing the same sheet at once, cursors moving in real time, comments, revision history, sharing by link. Nothing on the Mac does this better, and it is free. If your spreadsheet is a shared, living thing that a team touches together, Google Sheets is the right tool and Nought is not trying to replace it.

What that costs you

Google Sheets is a browser tab. It wants a Google account, it works best online; offline access exists but has to be turned on ahead of time. Your data lives on Google’s servers. And Google Sheets can edit .xlsx in Office compatibility mode, or convert to its own format for the full feature set. Either way the file goes to Google’s servers first, and you need an account. It is not a native app, so it does not feel like part of your Mac.

What Nought does instead

Nought is a native Mac app. It opens instantly, works fully offline, needs no account, and keeps your files on your own disk. It opens .xlsx in place and saves .xlsx back, with no upload and no conversion. There is no team editing your sheet, and that is the point: it is for private, local work that stays yours.

Privacy is the sharpest line. With Sheets your data is on Google’s servers under Google’s account system. With Nought it never leaves your machine.

Which to use

Use Google Sheets when the spreadsheet is shared and several people need to edit it live. Use Nought when the file is yours, lives on your Mac, needs to stay private, and you want a real native app that opens and saves .xlsx without a browser, an account, or a connection.
